Gigabyte Is First To Market With A PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD

TechPowerUp had enough time to take a quick look at what PCIe 4.0 will offer with the Gigabyte Aorus M.2 NVMe Gen4 SSD 2TB and ASRock X570 Taichi motherboard.  PCIe 4.0 drives will be in short supply for a while, however once you can get your hands on one and an X570 motherboard you can expect a 4GB ISO file to copy in a mere 3.8 seconds.  For now however, their advice is to hold off on spending $460 on this drive as testings show this specific NVMe controller does not take full advantage of the bandwidth available on the new interface.  The next generation has a lot of room to increase performance as the technology matures.

    While PCI-E 4.0 is good, that SSD is just bad, it is not better enough to replace the need of a RAID 0 setup. For example, if you are working with a RED raw 8K timeline and your Samsung 970 pro is bottlenecking,moving to that SSD will not fix the issue, but a RAID 0 setup will.

    It is best to wait until they get to a point where we get a clear doubling of SSD performance to fully take advantage of PCI-E 4.0.
