How Can It Be Telemetry If Microsoft Says It Isn’t?

When Is A Security Only Update Not Security Only?

It seems Microsoft just can’t help themselves, as they have pushed out a new update to Windows 7 and 8.1 which claims to be a security only patch, of the type of which users of the admittedly old operating systems rely on to ensure their systems are protected against new threats.  When questioned as to why there was monitoring software included in an update which specifically states it is security only, Microsoft stated it was to improve the EoL experience for Windows 7 users; the trouble is that Win 8.1 received the exact same update and it will be supported until 2023.  The Inquirer points out just how far this goes towards completely undermining Microsoft’s official reply.

If you are concerned, you can fire up ye olde Task Manager and look for ProgramDataUpdater, Microsoft Compatibility Appraiser, and AitAgent processes.

As ever these days, the biggest problem is Microsoft's seeming inability to be straight with customers. We'd probably have a lot more respect if they just said: "we're adding this, is that ok?".
