Philips Momentum 558M1RY, 55 Inches Of FreeSync HDR1000
4K Or Lower @ 120Hz
With an effective viewing area of 1209.6 x 680.4 mm or 47.6 x 26.8 freedom units, the Philips Momentum 558M1RY is a monster of a display and puts many TVs to shame. It comes with a remote control, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, Philips Ambiglow LED so you don’t need to pick up a third party solution and a built in soundbar from Bowers & Wilkins as well.
It is a flat VA panel with a 178º viewing angle, which you need with something of this size and offers native resolutions of 2560 x 1440 @ 120Hz, 3840 x 2160 @ 120Hz or 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz if you insist on using the HDMI 2.0 connection instead of DisplayPort. The monitor arrives with the stand already attached and only offers a tilt adjustment which spans -5 through 10 degrees, however it does have a VESA mount so you can purchase a more versatile mounting solution if you desire. There is a single USB-B upstream connector, but four downstream ports of which two support BC 1.2 charging.
Kitguru’s testing showed a bit of an issue with colour uniformity, not enough to interfere with the enjoyment of games or videos but it might present a problem if you intended to use it for graphic design purposes. The brightness ranged from 790 cd/m2 to 109 cd/m2, unfortunately it is not possible to measure HDR performance with a DataColor SpyderX Colorimeter. This VA panel also handles motion well, something which can be an issue with that particular type, Kitguru suggests applying the ‘Fastest’ setting to reduce blur as much as possible.
If you are looking for a large display that is great for PC gaming, or to get ready for the next generation of consoles you should drop by to make sure this will do what you need.
There’s no escaping the fact that Philips’ Momentum 558M1RY is a monster of a monitor. We’re not just talking about its huge 55in panel, though that is of course very hard to miss, as this screen also boasts a number of highly impressive features
