The Last Version Of Windows No More, Number 11 Is On Deck

If Windows 10 Ends On 14 October 2025, How Long Will We Still Be Dealing With It Afterwards?

Seeing as how you can still shock yourself by running into someone running Vista, will the death of the ‘last’ version of Windows be somewhat the same?  See, back in 2015, with the release of Windows 10 came the arrival of “Windows as a Service”, which a certain Microsoft employee described as making the question of what version of Windows you were on obsolete.  Windows 10 would be the last release of a Windows OS, from that date on all you would need to worry about were incremental updates.  He was at least partly right, we do indeed remain worried about the incremental updates!

Hot on the heels of the 2025 EoL announcement came a leak of a new version of Windows, not a resurrection of Windows 10X, though Windows 11 does seem to resemble it somewhat.  If the lack of rounded corners on everything was one of your main complaints about Windows then fret no more as there will be corners for everyone!  Then again, maybe your concern is that the Windows Start Menu just hadn’t changed enough in Windows 10.  In that case you are in luck, as not only do the leaked screenshots show a barely recognizable Start Menu, it seems that by default it is even found in the same place.  No longer can you indicate to people to click the ‘windows button’ in the lower left of the screen; instead it will be hanging around somewhere in the center.

Widgets are also making a return in Win11, to the delight of dozens of people, they weren’t functioning perfectly in the leaked version but it seems you will once again be able to bedazzle your desktop with random weather apps and clocks.  There will also be an easier way to cascade all your open windows, a functionality that someone out there must still be using.  There will also be a dark mode, for those that found dig around in Windows Themes to be a rewarding experience that needs to be expanded.

The biggest question on many minds is the price, which no mention was made of in the leak.  For most, Windows 10 came as a free upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 8, even today a key from one of those OSes will still activate a single copy of Windows 10.  It will be interesting to see if that continues, and if so, which previous versions will be eligible for the upgrade.  At this point, we don’t even know if you will be able to purchase Win11, or if we will see the inception of consumer licensing in Windows 11.

If you have masochistic tendencies there does seem to be an ISO floating around as part of the leak.

The statement is likely linked to the forthcoming event on 24 June where Microsoft promises to unveil what's next for Windows. Note that it is the future of Windows, not of Windows 10, that is the subject.

I sincerely hope it;s a free upgrade. I seriously cant see myself paying for windows again. Possibly a $5 OEM code on ebay but no more than that.
