Channel Well Inside, MSI Outside

The MSI MPG A850GF is, as the name suggest, an 850W PSU which is also fully modular and carries a 80 Plus Gold efficiency rating.  The cables are flat FlexForce style and include two 4+4 EPS cables as well as six 6+2 PCIe, five Molex and even a floppy drive cable, not to mention eight SATA cables and the ATX cord itself.  The combined output of the four 12V lanes is an impressive 70.83A; you might want to avoid mentioning that if you are in California.

The PSU is cooled by a 140mm fluid dynamic bearing fan and you will find both Nippon Chemi-con solid and standard capacitors as well as FPCAP solid capacitors inside.   Once on the bench, The FPS Review discovered that the MSI MPG A850GF provides excellent voltage regulation, and DC output as well as very good transient load testing, equal to the competition’s offerings at this wattage.  The noise from the fan came as a pleasant surprise, being inaudible until the PSU came under full load.

With a 10 year warranty and a $140 MSRP this is a great introductory offering from MSI.

Prior to this, about 14 years ago, MSI had a series of Turbostream power supplies that were absolute trash. This is in spite of the fact that MSI has been a major industry player in the enthusiast realm for a very long time before that abortive effort.
