Go Green; Win Green

The 2022 Hackaday prize challenge kicks off today, and apropos to the condition of the planet the five categories focus on green solutions to current products.  If you have an idea on how to improve the sustainability or effectiveness of existing sources of power, finding a way to properly recycle products that have hit the end of their usefulness, or even finding ways to make them useful again in some way then you should take a peek and think about entering.

As with the previous years, the categories are not winner take all.  In each of the five challenges the top ten submissions will each take home $500, with prizes for the top five projects ranging from $5000 to $50,000 and a residency at Supplyframe DesignLab.  That would give you access to professional level tools and a workshop to use them in, located in Pasadena, CA where you can work on your projects and collaborate with people that have similar interests.

The project you submit does not have to be 100% complete before you can enter it into the Hackaday Prize.  Your project needs to include a clear description of your idea, an image, and documentation that others are able to follow to make their own copy of your creation.  A video is certainly beneficial but not required unless you qualify for one of the top prizes.  Check out the challenges, dig through your old projects or ponder starting a new one, as you do still have quite a bit of time.

The first of the five challenges, Planet-Friendly Power, is now taking submissions and will do so until May 1st, the rest will open up over the course of the year so keep an eye open for the next step in the search for the winners of the 2022 Hackaday Prize.

The biggest challenge facing humanity over the next century is how to do as much or more, with less environmental impact. Reducing our collective footprint on the planet is of course not any one person’s responsibility alone, and if it’s going to require a million clever solutions to create a sustainable future, then we know just the group of hackers to get to work.
