All The Power Of A Ryzen 9 7950X At A 55W TDP?

AMD revealed Dragon Range, their new family of mobile processors, at CEX earlier this year and the Ryzen 9 7945HX is one of the more impressive examples.  It is based on Zen 4 chiplets and the 16 cores/32 threads run at 2.5GHz base, 5.4GHz boost yet it is advertised as having a 55W+ TDP, which includes an onboard AMD 610M GPU with RDNA2 technology.  To test just how effective this chip is, KitGuru tested a 2023 Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 G733PY gaming laptop in a variety of CPU tests.

The CPU itself pulled less than 100W peak in their testing yet it outperformed Intel’s 12th generation mobile parts in many tests.  There are even a few gaming tests where it outperforms the i9-12900K, though to be fair that has far more to do with the RTX 4090 than with the Ryzen 9 7945HX.  The power draw that AMD claimed is certainly accurate, with a 1.2V to 1.3V Vcore it draws less than the desktop equivalent, yet still manages to offer similar performance.

If you are looking for a production laptop running software which benefits from a strong CPU, a laptop based on the Ryzen 9 7945HX will give you that performance, while comparatively sipping on power.

The top-of-the-line Ryzen 9 7945HX promised 16 cores, 32 threads, heaps of cache and up to 5.4GHz Boost speed. That sounds like a regular Ryzen 9 7950X with a TDP of a mere 55W which is surely impossible and something we have to see for ourselves.
