The Raspberry Pi 5 Is Coming, If You Pre-Ordered

It’s Learned Some New Tricks

It’s a sadly familiar story, the world’s favourite tiny PC has limited supplies to sell to those who want one.  The Raspberry Pi 5 has launched, but only those who pre-ordered one have any chance of seeing one in the near future.  The head of the company does offer some good news, stating production is going better than expected and that some 4GB and 8GB models should hit the shelves before the end of the year.  If you are hoping to get your hands on one quickly Eben Upton’s advice is to order it now, as they will be fulfilling direct orders before releasing stock to your favourite store.

The $80 Pi 5, powered by a 2.4GHz, quad-core Cortex-A76, does offer an interesting new feature for those that want to play with the new PCIe slot found on the board.  If you clone a working microSD install onto an NVMe drive, you can stick that drive on a PCIe adapter and with a bit of tweaking your Raspberry Pi 5 will boot from that SSD.  This adds a significant boost in speed and reliability to your little system.  You can see how to accomplish this over at Hackaday.

According to Pi supremo Eben Upton, "Priority Boarding" orders are starting to head out this week and are expected to be complete by the end of next. Approved resellers are also due to get their initial stock of 4GB and 8GB Pi 5s, meaning pre-orders should start appearing shortly.

You’ll have to wait for another week if you want one from MicroCenter. They pushed back their release from Oct 23 to Nov 3 without any comment as to why.

And now it’s Nov 3 and still nothing at MicroCenter.

Dec 6 and still no sign of any nor any Rpi zero 2 W. I don’t think they’ve ever had a single one in stock.

Coming up on 2024 and still never seen any Rpi5 nor zero 2 W’s in stock at the local Microcenter.
