Assuming The Xbox Game Studios Layoffs Don’t Spread To Obsidian

It was 2021 when we saw the announcement trailer for Outer Worlds 2, and that was about the last we heard of it until now.  This is in part due to development slowing to a crawl during the plague years, with the project endangered but managing to survive.  Apparently it is now feeling much better and Feargus Urquhart assures us in a recent interview that all is going well.  The development of Avowed and Pillars Of Eternity certainly did pull resources away from Outer Worlds 2 but it is now one of Obsidian’s top priorities.

There is still little news in the way of a firm release date, and with other games like Avowed having been delayed it may be some time before we see what they can do with the new Unreal Engine.  If you are hoping to grab a new can of Spacers Choice you have a ways to wait.

According to Obsidian's studio head Feargus Urquhart, the project is rubbing along nicely. But it was not ever thus: during the opening years of the Covid pandemic, there was apparently "talk of 'do we stop Outer Worlds 2 and just throw the whole team on Avowed'."
