The Chances Of An Intel Raptor Lake Class Action Suite Continues To Increase

Over-volting By Default Is A Bad Idea?

Intel is having a bad time with Raptor Lake and things look to get worse as lawyers are now getting involved.  The legal firm of Abington Cole + Ellery announced they were looking into the possible success of launching a class action suite against Intel and now Kaplan Gore is considering it as well.  They feel that because the excess voltage could cause permanent irreversible damage to the CPU they have created a Investigation Inquiry Form that Raptor Lake system owners can fill out.  This is specifically those who bought a complete system from an OEM and not for enthusiasts that built their own systems, as Intel is already offering a two year extended warranty on retail Raptor Lake CPUs.   As of yet Intel has not offered those who purchased a full system from an OEM or boutique system builder any additional protections or recourse.  You can follow the link at The Register if you want to add your name to the inquiry.

The good news is that Intel is working on a microcode update to stop their Raptor Lake CPUs from committing silicon suicide.   You can also manually modify your motherboard settings to reduce the possibility of your CPU receiving too much voltage, a very good idea while we await the permanent fix.   There have been reports of people having trouble with Intel’s RMA process, which seems to have been resolved.  You are better off avoiding having to replace your CPU altogether though!

Do you think Intel regrets squeezing that extra 100MHz out of the chip now?

It's the second known law biz to publicly announce it might bring Intel to court over issues with the company's desktop CPUs. Abington Cole + Ellery similarly said last week it was looking into a suit against Chipzilla.
