Intel wants to show everyone that good old x86 can still be the best option

If there was ever a time when Intel needed an all-new CPU architecture, it’s now. Based on the Lunar Lake µarch announced back in May, Intel is calling the new Core Ultra 200V series “the most efficient family of x86 processors ever”, claiming up to 50% better perf/watt, up to 2x the graphics performance, and taking a few jabs at Qualcomm along the way.

Intel jabs QC over notebook battery life

Intel’s spicy battery life slide calls out Qualcomm

Via Intel:

“Intel today launched its most efficient family of x86 processors ever, the Intel Core Ultra 200V series processors. They deliver exceptional performance, breakthrough x86 power efficiency, a massive leap in graphics performance, no-compromise application compatibility, enhanced security and unmatched AI compute. The technology will power the industry’s most complete and capable AI PCs with more than 80 consumer designs from more than 20 of the world’s top manufacturing partners, including Acer, ASUS, Dell Technologies, HP, Lenovo, LG, MSI and Samsung. Pre-orders begin today with systems available globally on-shelf and online at over 30 global retailers starting Sept. 24. All designs featuring Intel Core Ultra 200V series processors and running the latest version of Windows are eligible to receive Copilot+ PC features as a free update starting in November.”

LNL Key Energy Innovations

Intel was clearly targeting battery life with the new processors – which makes sense considering these will be found in many new laptops soon, and you can read about their quest for efficiency and speed in this article. Some of the details are straightforward enough, like doubling the E-core count (and shared L2 cache), but I will leave it to Josh to talk about details like the 26 dispatch ports and 128-bit FP and SIMD vectors.

Complicated LNL Architectural Details

Ultimately, the Lunar Lake architecture sounds very promising, and will apparently NOT be affected by any of the current generation’s pesky instability concerns – an important factor when considering the eventual desktop counterpart to these new mobile offerings.

All of the usual suspects are on board for this new launch, and you can expect to see some Core Ultra 200V branding on a laptop near you very soon.
