A New PCIe Gen5 SSD Controller Arrives! The Silicon Motion SM2508

Move Over Phison?

Rejoice, for there is soon to be more competition in the PCIe Gen 5 market!  Silicon Motion have released a new controller, the SM2508 to compete with Phison’s PS5026-E26 and a small variety of products from companies you’ve never heard of before.  It has taken some time to develop, and hasn’t quite hit the market yet but TweakTown had an opportunity to test out an engineering sample on Intel, AMD and even on a PS5.

The numbers are very impressive, 13,021 MB/s sequential write on AMD and coming near the top in many of their tests, both synthetic and real world.  The SM2508 is also comparatively quite energy efficient, at no time was a heatsink needed to stop performance degradation.  This is not a retail product being testing, so we might see even more impressive performance once an actual drive hits the market, especially at higher capacities; these results were on a 1TB drive.

Even if SSD controllers don’t immediately excite you, the review is worth checking out!

After nearly two years of waiting, Silicon Motion is about to unleash its first client PCIe Gen5 SSD controller in the SM2508, and it's a game-changer.
