Is It Wrong To Still Mock Star Citizen And Squadron 42?

It’s Only 11 Years After All, 23 Years Is The Best Star Craft Ghost Can Hope For
Roberts Space Industries may be moving on from simply harvesting money from hopeful backers and might be releasing an actual game next year. At CitizenCon, because of course the unreleased game has a convention, Chris Roberts showed off a roughly hour-long prologue of Squadron 42. It certainly had some issues, but that is pretty much guaranteed if you try to show off an unreleased product live. There were the expected amount of cinematics, to wit approaching half of the reveal of Squadron 42. Assuming sometime in 2026 we do see Squadron 42 for sale, you can expect a 30- to 40-hour storyline. If you are hoping a date for the full flavour MMORPG Star Citizen, you will have to wait an indefinite time.
If you are curious why taking shots at RSI isn’t an example of schadenfreude; caveat emptor is your answer. The Kickstarter backer statements did state there was no release date for either Squadron 42 nor Star Citizen. The intention was to focus on creating an amazing game, not meeting deadlines. That, plus the fact Chris Robert’s development history includes Wing Commander and more, drew a lot of backers. Those original backers put in a combined total of $2,134,374 into the project, which expanded to $67 million when he first started collecting money on his own RSI site. Since then he has accumulated $731 million and has yet to release a working demo, let alone an actual product. This is by no means a failed product for RSI.
It's been almost exactly a year now since we reported on the announcement that Squadron 42—the single-player campaign portion of the now 12-year-old crowdfunding boondoggle Star Citizen—was "feature complete" and in the "polish phase."

What is this dogshit?
Star Citizen has extracted millions of dollars out of its playerbase. Mock?
Bruh Star Citizen should be dragged through razor laced shit fields.
“Since then he has accumulated $731 million and has yet to release a working demo…”
lol, really. No demo? It’s crystal clear when either someone hasn’t done their homework or is trying to twist the intent behind their words. Yeah no SQ42 demo, but I literally played Star Citizen yesterday. Not only that, I explored planets, killed goons, collected loot, made millions salvaging derilect ships, bought couches for my hangar, landed at space stations, traveled the Stanton system, raced ships in the racing feature…..no there isn’t a demo, there’s already a whole game with multiple professions and gameplay loop. Plenty of issues but also plenty of game. Are you all high?
Again, is it a proper 11 year, 731 million dollar MMORPG? Or just a shitty, enlarged demo put out to placate the gullible idiots who back them? How many other online players did you interact with?
I’m not guy you replied to, but at the moment each instance in sc has 100 players, and they’ve been steadily increasing player count per session (50, then 75, 100, etc, and they’ve tested up to 200 per instance, plus most of the time the instances are full or nearly full). They are currently testing alpha 4.0 via the public test client, which implements server meshing which should allow far more players per instance.
Anyway, regarding interacting? you will run into other players on your travels, there are PVP events, PVPVE events, and most gameplay loops will have you returning to a city or space station to re-supply, pay off bounties/fines, refine ore you’ve mined, sell pirated loot, etc
Beyond that, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWm_OhIKms8 no other game engine is capable of this yet.
That all being said, you can definitely have issues with how they’ve raised funding, and you can definitely critique what is probably the best modern example of scope creep. but to say they haven’t developed anything impressive is just a blatant lie or willful ignorance.
WORKING demo. Last time I booted up Star Shitizen, I pressed a single button, and my character hopped out of his space bed and clipped through the floor of the station to promptly die in the vacuum of space.
The only thing worth mocking here is the author of this article.
Because? It’s our money for our game. It’s crazy how concerned people are.
Should they just stop? Should all MMOs just stop accepting cash, lol. Weird ass
The game is playable, beautiful and fun ATM. IDC about their bank account or drama, or any of it. I like the game.
Called it a fake game back when it was announced. Had friends refuse to play Eve-online due to “a better game arround the corner”. The game is a joke 700m for 40h. It’s not wrong it’s only wrong to defend them. It’s a scam it’s a joke.
you also say this about Skull and bones? 800million and 10 years for a shitty cheap mmorp what has tech and graphics of 2010?
700 Mill for 2 games with new breakthrough tech sounds pretty decend for cig.
dont forget gta 6 sits at 6years? and 2 Billion$. and they still dont have a working demo yet. you also say gta is a scam?
More than mocked. I know someone first hand who had spent several hundreds of dollars over tge years and became jaded and resentful further becoming agoraphobic. There’s more to it than star citizen but I really dont understand how they still are making money and no one questions there so called “transparency”
Not released a working demo? LMAO you can play Star Citizen right now for $40 you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Is it a a proper 11 year, 731million dollar MMORPG? Or some shitty enlarged demo put out so gullible idiots will continue backing them?
What a clickbait nothing-burger press release of an article. Adding this site to blocked, simply because of this puff piece.
Hahaha! I’m a12yr backer and trust me, there is no ‘working demo’, period. It’s a complete shit show now and has been for many, many yrs.
Log into the current live or ptu and prove me wrong! Chris Roberts is a cancer to this project and until he is removed from the helm, there will be no finished game.
Of course it’s ok to mock a game that still gets funding, because all I see is a project meant to protect jobs. As long as they announce it’s coming they can continue to work.
Perhaps now giving a 2 year release window the people at top can retire.
Of course its fine. It’s never coming out. They said five years ago that SQ42 was a year away. Last year they called it feature complete. It’s never coming out and star citizen was always a fantasy. Now it’s 7 systems when the original pitch was 100. Even they realize star citizen was never possible. Especially on the Cry Engine.
Long time backer. Star citizen is nothing more but a laggy, buggy, and broken tech demo even in 2024. I’ve been waiting for sq42 since 2016 yet here we are now with a 2026 placeholder release date that more or less might even get delayed again.
No it needs to be mocked. Star citizen could be amazing but is always riddled with bugs and horrible server performance. They’ve stated there main project is squadron, something nobody wanted or asked for. And star citizen comes second. It’s bs.
