Apple’s Below $3000 Headset Delayed; Why Not Try A Pi Powered DIY AR Headset

The rumour has it that Apple is delaying production of their more affordable mixed reality headset in favour of developing a new version of their Vision Pro headset.  The current version runs from around $2000 to $3500, which is a bit much for your average consumer.  The next version, scheduled to be released next year, will likely be priced higher, it will use the M5 chip and have a lot more AI baked in.  The more affordable version, which won’t offer quite as many features has been delayed until 2027; 2025 was the original plan.

Since you won’t be able to play with either of these until at least next year, why not use a Raspberry Pi Zero to create your own DIY AR headset?  It’s not going to be the easiest project to attempt, you will be making your own lenses, frames and spend a fair amount of time programming.  The result will be an AR headset with a 60 FPS SPI display, capable of video playback, Bluetooth audio, teleprompting, an image viewer and even more.  The details can be found at Hackaday now, with the creator working on a more powerful version running on a Compute Module 4.

Apple has scrapped plans for a budget mixed-reality headset initially slated for 2025, pushing the launch to 2027, according to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

I’m picturing a scene in an ophthalmologist chair, “YOU DID WHAT?!?!? no, I don’t know how to fix this, how the hell would anyone know how to fix this?!?!?!?”
