Microsoft Reveals A Windows 11 Remote Recovery Tool
For The Next BSoD Apocalypse; Thanks CrowdStrike!
Microsoft are working on a remote recovery tool they call Quick Machine Recovery, which should prevent what happened with a bad CrowdStrike update from ever happening again. That update, since antivirus software touches Windows in a very sensitive place, the bad update prevented computers across the world from booting. The idea is to enable sysadmins to push targeted fixes from Windows Update to remote computers, even ones unable to fully boot. It will be interesting to see how effective this will be and if machines will have to be configured in a specific way, such as set to boot from the network.
Along with the remote recovery tool is some details on a new Windows 11 administrator protection security feature. It will only work for those that haven’t disabled Windows Hello, as that is the authentication method it uses. It will also ensure that the logged in user does not have admin privileges, which could be an issue for some users but will definitely improve sysadmin’s lives. This should be more difficult to circumvent than the current UAC prompts, but may require a bit of a change in how companies operate to properly apply.
There are no details on when these features will become available to everyone, but you will likely hear a lot more about them soon.
This new feature is part of a new Windows Resiliency Initiative launched in response to a widespread July 2024 outage caused by a buggy CrowdStrike Falcon update that rendered hundreds of thousands of Windows devices unbootable, impacting airlines, hospitals, and emergency services worldwide.
