ICYMI, Half Life 3 Rumours Are A Thing Again In 2025
It’s All The G-Man’s Fault, Of Course
On New Year’s Eve, Mike Shapiro posted his first tweet in over four years. It was a video post where he, in his G-Man character’s voice and pacing, announced that “the next quarter century [will] deliver as many unexpected surprises as did the millennium’s first (emphasis added)… See you in the new year.”. To feed the rumours even more, in an interview with USGamer he revealed that had recently been working on a project which was a “blast from the past”. He did voice work in Crackdown, DOTA 2 and GTA V so you can’t guarantee that he was referring to working on Half Life 3, but the post done in character certainly lends credence to that conclusion.
In addition to this hint, five months ago we saw a number of leaks and rumours surrounding an internal Valve project called HLX, which has been referenced in a number of other Source 2 engine game files. A fellow by the name of Tyler McVicker has posted numerous videos analyzing the Valve code and concluded that the HLX project is “a fully-fledged non-VR Half-Life game.” His investigation into the code has also revealed a variety of new voxel-based deformation systems, zero-g and underwater navigation systems, and in his words “so much flammability stuff”.
So once more we are asking … Half Life 3 confirmed?
The latest tease came just before the end of 2024 via a New Year's Eve social media video from G-Man voice actor Mike Shapiro. In the voice of the mysterious in-game bureaucrat, Shapiro expresses hopes that "the next quarter century [will] deliver as many unexpected surprises as did the millennium's first (emphasis added)... See you in the new year."
