Warner Bros Murders Monolith

It’s Not Just Wonder Woman

Warner Bros have done something awful, again.  They’ve closed Monolith after 30 years of successful game publishing and the reasoning is even worse than you think.  The quote from Rock, Paper, SHOTGUN gives the reasoning; “We have had to make some very difficult decisions to structure our development studios and investments around building the best games possible with our key franchises — Harry Potter, Mortal Kombat, DC and Game of Thrones“.

The Harry Potter franchise?  As in one game that some people played and others threw tantrums about?  Again, one single game?

Mortal Kombat?  Is that even a thing anymore?  Do people actually play it?

Game of Thrones?  Wasn’t that Cyanide, or are they seriously calling that mobile game a franchise?

DC?  Ignore that they killed Wonder Woman for a moment and recall the utter dumpster fire which was Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League!

That’s the list of what they’ve decided is more important than continuing Blood, AvP, No One Lives Forever, F.E.A.R., Condemned: Criminal Origins, or Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor; to name just a few of Monolith’s hit games.

Along with Monolith goes Player First Games and Warner Bros Games San Diego, the former of which will likely be missed more than the latter.  There are no details on how many people will be losing their jobs over this, but it is a great reminder to those who forgot exactly why they hate the gaming division of Warner Bros.

I had sort of assumed that Monolith would never be closed, because how could you close the studio who gave us F.E.A.R., Condemned and Shadow Of Mordor. It's been a while since those releases and I'm sure many of the team members have long since moved on, but their legacy is infectious.
