We Spoke Too Soon, There Was A Problem With Patch Tuesday … But It’s Better Now

Updating Windows is Cheating!

Patch Tuesday seemed to go without a hitch, until it hit players of online games like Elder Rings, Fortnite and Apex Legends.  They were seeing BSODs which lead to what was apparently the fastest withdraw of an update by Microsoft.  This also lead to one of the fastest reinstatement of a patch as the issue was quickly identified as Epic’s Easy Anti-Cheat software.  It was causing the classic IRQ Not Less Than of Equal BSODs on patched systems and a solution was quickly found.  If you were holding off on installing the latest Patch Tuesday release you should now be safe.

This is not the first time Easy Anti-Cheat and Windows Update got into a fight and hurt the children.  Earlier this year many users had to hold off on installing Windows 11 24H2 to avoid BSODs, and there have been other occurrences before that.  One might be a bit suspicious about exactly what EAC is doing on your machine, and if Epic might want to reach out to Microsoft to see if this could be avoided in the future.

At least it was fixed quickly.
