Mixed Messaging From Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella

Satya Nadella sent message to the remaining employees at Microsoft, or perhaps Copilot did. There have so far been 15,000 people let go in 2025, which is approximately 4% of their workforce, yet according to the messaging “Our overall headcount is relatively unchanged … yet, at the same time, we’ve undergone layoffs.“. If that wasn’t confusing enough, the message talks about the lack of “franchise value” at Microsoft, which doesn’t have franchises but certainly saw their annual revenue increase 16% percent year-over-year for total of $245 billion.
As you should expect by now the rest of the message touted the amazing benefits of AI, and how Microsoft must become “an intelligence engine empowering every person and organization to build whatever they need to achieve.” Truly impressive word salad without any content whatsoever. It is possible some employees found Satya Nadella’s messaging to be reassuring, but it seems unlikely to provide the moral boost that Copilot thought it should.
Thanking terminated employees for their service, Nadella attempted to address the cognitive dissonance that follows from headcount trimming at a time of strong financial performance.
