Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF, Bringing Back 3D But Not The Glasses

Are 3D Games Even A Thing Anymore?

Long time readers may recall NVIDIA 3D Vision displays with their active 3D glasses, which even spread to laptops and inspired competitors to find ways to give a sort of 3D experience without needing active glasses.  It died quickly, but for a while it was the latest and greatest thing.  Samsung wants to bring it back, and have released the Samsung Odyssey 3D G90XF which is supposed to revive 3D displays and without the need for 3D glasses.  

The Odyssey 3D G90XF is a 27″ 4K IPS panel with a refresh rate that goes up to 165Hz and has a way to toggle between 2D and 3D modes.  The 3D mode is made possible thanks to a lenticular lens array that can provide different pixels to each eye, as well as a camera at the top of the display and two infrared cameras embedded in the lower bezel to provide very accurate eye tracking.  This design tricks your brain into seeing depth on a flat screen, and since the Odyssey 3D G90XF does all the work you can try 3D mode in any game.  This means developers don’t need to redesign a game engine with 3D capabilities, but if they do tweak their game for 3D the display should work better.

TweakTown were impressed with the idea but found the execution somewhat distracting and also gives a bit of a performance hit.  The fact that the Odyssey 3D G90XF costs $2000 is also somewhat unattractive.  If you do want to see 3D make a comeback, check out the full review before jumping in.
