The MSI MAG 272QP QD-OLED X50 Can Hit 500Hz

It Hurts To Realize There’s No GPU That Can Drive Your Favourite Games At That Refresh Rate

The 27″ MSI MAG 272QP QD-OLED X50 is the current Magnum Opus of monitors, a 1440p QD-OLED panel with DisplayHDR True Black 500, a 1500000:1 contrast ratio, a huge colour gamut and a 500Hz refresh rate.   The connectivity includes two HDMI 2.1 ports, a DP 1.4a and a USB Type-C with DP alt and 15W power delivery; all of these are capable of handling the bandwidth required to hit 500 Hz.  The problem is that even the best GPU is going to have a big problem hitting that refresh rate on high end games, unless perhaps you set all effects to low and use DLSS/FSR to upscale from a rather low resolution.

TweakTown found that League of Legends was a good way to test, and were blow away by the stability of the image at 300 and 500 FPS.  They posted a video but as the monitor you will watch them on can’t keep up to properly display the power of the MAG 272QP, a slow motion version does help somewhat but this seems to be something you need to see live to appreciate.  DOOM: The Dark Ages was another good test subject for extremely high frame rates.

The bad news, as you will not be able to max out your refresh rate on your favourite games, is that if you already have a ~360 Hz display then you won’t see much improvement.  If you have a mere 144Hz or so though, this might be an $850 investment to consider.

MSI has released the dream monitor for eSports gamers, the MAG 272QP QD-OLED X50, which sports a blisteringly quick 500Hz refresh rate at QHD.
