Windows 10 Turns 10 Years Old
Windows 10 Appeared For Retail Sale On July 29, 2015
Yes, it has been an entire decade since we saw the beginning of the end for Windows 8 and 8.1, as Windows 10 was made available to the public. There were some who had already seen Microsoft’s new OS as it was released to system manufacturers on July 15, so some new systems came with Windows 10 already installed. The new OS was actually exciting for many people, as it came with Microsoft’s all new DirectX 12 runtime. That lead to some amusing videos which have been lost to the mists of time, which claimed to give a sneak peek at DX12 but were generally just had their brightness tweaked.
Windows 10 was a bit more successful than Windows 11, taking less than three years to overtake Windows 7 as the most popular Microsoft OS. It has taken Windows 11 until this month to finally overtake Windows 10, though not every stat counter agrees that has happened yet. If you give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt, it has taken Windows 11 a year longer to gain it’s majority compared to Windows 10, and that likely only because of the huge volume of notifications and advertising informing people Windows 10 is hitting EOL.
Microsoft paired Windows 10 Mobile with other efforts to spread the Windows joy across devices, including HoloLens and its lineup of tablets. In the end, the desktop was the place where the operating system thrived, assisted by a controversial free upgrade from previous versions and broad hardware compatibility that would make a Windows 11 administrator weep.
