Windows 11 Hits 50 Percent Market Share … Almost Four Years After It’s Release

Windows 11 just hit 50.24% market share, a mere 46 months after it was first made available; Windows 10 is down to 46.84% and you shouldn’t think about what version of Windows the remainder are using.  With Windows 10 hitting official EoL on October 14 of this year many corporate customers are finally migrating to the new OS.  The various tricks to get a year of free security updates are not particularly attractive to businesses, and paying for extended security updates would quickly become more expensive than replacing aging hardware and that is likely why Windows 11 has finally passed 50%.

The other choice businesses now have is to migrate to a Windows 365 subscription, which brings with it free ESU access.  Then again, this also makes it easy for computers that are compatible with Windows 11 to migrate to that OS.  This trend isn’t helping retail vendors with their stockpile of computers however, as consumers don’t seem to find the new AI PC models attractive enough to justify the expense of a new computer.

Is this something Microsoft should celebrate, or treat this as a disappointing learning experience for when the next version of Windows is released?
