Microsoft’s Last Patch Tuesday Just Keeps On Giving

The most recently discovered issue with Microsoft’s latest batch of patches isn’t quite as bad as storage devices you aren’t allowed to move data to but it is certainly upsetting a lot of people.  If you stream with an app that uses Network Device Interface you may have noticed a severe drop in the quality of your video streams, and you are not alone.  This protocol is used in popular apps like OBS and NDI Tools and is supposed to use RUDP as opposed to  TCP or UDP when you are streaming your desktop.

If you haven’t run into RUDP, it stands for Reliable User Datagram Protocol and in a way is the exact opposite of UDP.  It ensures your packets are delivered in the proper order as opposed to UDP which is unconcerned if the packet makes it to the recipient, let alone the order in which the packet do arrive.  RUDP does this with less overhead and latency than TCP/IP does, which is why programs like OBS make use of it.

Thankfully Bleeping Computer posted a quick fix involving changing your protocol to single TCP or UDP with the help of the NDI Tools pack.  They’ve got a link posted along with instructions so you will be able to do some Friday night streaming, if that was your plan.

The issue affects streaming apps, including OBS (Open Broadcast Software) and NDI Tools, especially when 'Display Capture' is enabled on the source PC. The problem persists even under low bandwidth conditions.
