LaCie Rugged SSD4 Portable SSD Review – A Sensible USB4 Option
Small, light, durable, and 40 Gbps.
There’s a new orange-bumpered option from LaCie, and it is a portable SSD with the potential to fully saturate your system’s USB4 connection. Sure, it’s backwards compatible with all USB interfaces, but if you want to see speeds of up to 4000 MB/s you will need that 40 Gbps connection.
Announced September 15th, it’s the aptly-named Rugged SSD4 Portable SSD, available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. LaCie sent us the 2TB capacity model for our review.
“For filmmakers, photographers, and audio professionals who need reliable high-performance data storage, the Rugged SSD4 delivers up to 4000MB/s read and 3800MB/s write speeds. The drive’s USB 40Gbps port allows users to quickly transfer files and work directly from the drive across Mac, iPad, PC, and mobile phones.”

The Rugged SSD4 Portable SSD
The drive is packaged simply, and includes a matching orange USB4 cable, 0.3 meters (close to one foot) in length. The drive’s dimensions are listed as (LxWxD) 17.33 x 66.87 x 105.34 mm (0.682 x 2.633 x 4.147 inches), and it weighs 108 grams (3.81 oz).
Performance Testing
Using a new ASUS ROG Strix G16 laptop (powered by an AMD Ryzen 9 9955HX3D processor with 32GB of DDR5 memory and a mobile NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti GPU), we connected the LaCie Rugged SSD4 2TB to an available USB4 port and began some basic testing. The drive was configured for maximum performance, and write caching was enabled.
Using a 40 Gbps connection the Rugged SSD4 is rated at up to 4000 MB/s on all reads, but gets its extremely fast write speeds thanks to a cache equal to 4% of the drive’s capacity. The 2TB (as reviewed) and 4TB models will, naturally, have the largest cache and best write performance.
We are indeed seeing the full potential transfer speeds from the Rugged SSD4, slightly exceeding 4000 MB/s from the sequential reads, though the 3700 MB/s sequential writes were 100 MB/s lower than the max (this could be releated to transfer size/default CrystalDiskMark settings). Regardless, it will take me a while to get used to speed like this from a portable SSD.
LaCie told us to expect writes of up to 3800 MB/s for that first 4% of the drive, dropping to anywhere between 850 MB/s and 1750 MB/s afterward. This is typical of external SSDs we’ve tested, which have lightning fast writes for moderate file transfers, and fall when huge directories (think Steam backup) are transferred. Let’s see how it fared from some large file transfers in Windows Explorer:
It might be hard to tell from the screenshots of the file transfers, but the initial speeds were indeed near 4000 MB/s, eventually falling to the 1500 – 1700 MB/s level. Everything is functioning as it should, and smaller transfers will see the full benefit of a USB4 connection.
Conclusion
Living with the Rugged SSD4 is painless. It connects to any USB-C port from 40 Gbps on down (a Type A-to-C adapter may be required for 5 Gbps connections). The drive manages the cache automatically, recovering its original capacity after large transfers. Additionally, the enclosure has been designed to avoid thermal throttling in ambient air up to 35 C, according to LaCie.
At $214.99 USD for the 2TB model we tested (current price as of 09/24/25), the Rugged SSD4 is a compelling alternative to popular USB4 options such as the SanDisk Extreme PRO USB4 ($279.99 USD). Anyone familiar with that orange bumper design knows that it will be durable, and this one is IP54 rated for dust and water, and drop tested to 3 meters.
If you’re in the market for a fast portable SSD that can leverage the potential of a USB4 interface, the LaCie Rugged SSD4 is a sensible choice. The competitive price tag and peace of mind from the durable external design make it an easy recommendation.
Current pricing for the LaCie Rugged SSD4 is as follows:
- LaCie Rugged SSD4 – 1TB: $119.99
- LaCie Rugged SSD4 – 2TB: $214.99
- LaCie Rugged SSD4 – 4TB: $399.99
