Bring The Noise! Turning Your WiFi Signals Into Dial-up Audio

Source: Hackaday Bring The Noise! Turning Your WiFi Signals Into Dial-up Audio

Some Fun For Your Friday

If you miss the sweet sound of a dial-up connection screeching in your ears then Hackaday has great news for you.  With the help of a Raspberry Pi and a bit of extra hardware you can monitor your WiFi traffic and use it to generate tomes which almost sound like the internet in the days of yore.   It’s not an exact match, transmission speeds are a far cry from the what the old 56K modems provided, they’re not slow enough to actually produce an audible signal.  That doesn’t meant that you can’t use some creative programming and a DAC to emulate sound however.  There is also a security benefit to not perfectly matching the signal, so it’s for the best the audio is based on your WiFi traffic but not a perfect match.

If you were ever curious about what the dial-up noises actually represented, follow this link for a description and a much larger version of the image above.

However, [Nick] found an anachronistic way to make a sound out of WiFi signals that sounds vaguely reminiscent of old-school modems.
