Windows Update And Shutdown Now Works As Advertised?

It’s A Minor Bug But Annoying And Nice To See The Last Of!

Amongst the other unwanted features which the release of Windows 10 gave us, was a bug with Windows Update.  If you asked your machine to Update and Shutdown, it would instead act as if you’d chosen Update and Restart and that bug has been with us ever since.  This was a monumental annoyance for many users who already avoid clicking on the Windows Update restart prompt like they should avoid clicking on phishing links.  Sadly they are far more likely to click on that phishing link than let Windows Update do it’s things.

One excuse is that they should be able to apply updates at the end of the day and just walk away, but the security policy says they have to shut down at the end of day so they can’t possibly do it then.  It can also be a major pain when setting up several machines at once which you want to get to a certain point and then shut them off.

It’s a small victory, but one which may help security assuming you can convince your users to update to the latest Windows 11 25H2 version.

The issue affected users across both operating systems since Windows 10's initial release. The fix arrived in Windows 11 25H2 Build 26200.7019 and the October 2025 optional update KB5067036.
