Deus Ex IS Why Stealth Was An Option In Fallout 3

He Even Came Up With Oblivion’s Dark Brotherhood

Emil Pagliarulo has worked on a lot of the games you loved over the years, including Thief II: The Metal Age, Oblivion and Fallout 3.  It is that last one that is the focus of Rock, Paper, SHOTGUN’s interview with him.  As it turns out he loved Deus Ex and that game lead him to try to incorporate as much of that feeling as he could into Fallout 3.  Your memory might be a bit fuzzy of those long ago times, but that was the first time you enjoyed a stealth detection meter.  Instead of either being invisible or spotted, you got an indication that you were slipping out of the shadows and in danger of being spotted.  That gave you a chance to dip back into cover before you were attacked, and gave a far different feeling to your stealthy antics.

He also brought reverse pickpocketing into the series, to the detriment of many NPCs who found a live grenade in their pockets.  Reminisce with the other ideas he brought to Bethesda that shape games to this day, if you aren’t too busy.

One is Emil Pagliarulo, who long ago worked at Looking Glass on Thief II: The Metal Age. It’s he we have to thank for Life of the Party, the standout level in which Garrett scampers between rooftops and open windows, drawing an impromptu path between the private properties of priests, nobles and necromancers.
