Stop Killing Games And UFC-Que Choisir Are Furious About The Crew And More

The idea of always online games upsets the majority of gamers, well at least those old enough to remember when you could play single player games without having any internet.  Those of us of a certain age recall the death of GameSpy and the vast swaths of multiplayer games rendered useless; only a few made the conversion to Steam to allow play to continue.  Unfortunately game publishers never got the message, or simply don’t care, because they continue to release games that not only require an internet connection but also a connection to a specific set of servers.  If those servers are down, or purposely shut down as in the case of The Crew, your game will no longer run.

Stop Killing Games have been trying to go after publishers like Ubisoft who love mandatory online connections and apparently also amuse themselves by shutting down servers and rendering games unplayable.  If you try to find a workaround to this requirement, you will need to brush up on your Ace Attorney skills as you will soon find yourself in court.

UFC-Que Choisir is a large French consumers group who, along with the help of Stop Killing Games, are now taking Ubisoft to court over their choice to kill the servers required to be able to play The Crew.  This is big news, as the EU has far more powerful consumer protection laws than North America and a success there may mean that The Crew comes back for everyone.

Rock. Paper, SHOTGUN has the links if you want to test your French, or the effectiveness of your favourite online translator.

A major French consumers group is taking Ubisoft to court over the publisher's ending of online support for The Crew in March 2024, rendering the notionally singleplayer-friendly open world racer unplayable.
