SteamOS 3.8.25 Beta Adds Significantly Expanded Compatibility
Great News For The Dozens That Paid For The MSI’s Claw 8 EX AI+, And More
Valve is thankfully continuing to expand the hardware that SteamOS supports instead of locking their OS to the Steam Machine; a hard to get and rather expensive system. SteamOS 3.8.25 will now run on a variety of handheld gaming devices, not just MSI’s Claw but also other obscure models like the Windows-based Konkr Fit. Indeed, at this point the only handheld Ars Technica is aware of that isn’t SteamOS approved is the Lenovo Legion Go S. This is all in addition to the previous update that added a huge swath of AMD and Intel systems.
The update also included an update to Linux driver the new Steam Controller uses to allow you to use it in any game if you switch to Desktop mode. This could make the Steam Controller more popular. On the other hand Rock, Paper, SHOTGUN has doubts the reception of the upcoming Steam Frame headset will be as positive, for reasons they delve into here.

SteamOS is continuing its slow march to fuller support on a wider variety of non-Valve hardware. This weekend’s release of the SteamOS 3.8.25 Beta includes “initial gamepad support” for a few recent gaming handhelds and improved support for a few others.
