The GPU Coil Whine Database; Trying To Crowdsource A Solution

It Can’t Hurt And Maybe Something Good Will Come Of It

The past few years have introduced a new problem for PC enthusiasts, one which has nothing to do with AI for a change.  As the power requirements and performance of our GPUs have increased, a phenomenon called coil whine has become a problem for many.  The high-pitched whine of a GPU under load is driving some people mad, while others have never experience this issue.  That could in part be thanks to us greybeards losing the ability to hear high pitched noises, especially those of us who were and may still be dedicated concert goers.

For others it is a definite problem and one which doesn’t seem to be consistent.  There could be two apparently identical GPUs; same vendor and same model, with one producing noticeable coil whine and one only making the sweet sounds of fans spinning at 100%.  Hackaday has a link to a GitHub repo where you can submit your experiences with your GPU (or PSU or AiO cooler) by rating the coil whine and providing details on your component including the exact SKU.

Who knows, maybe this will lead to a possible solution.
