You would need to go all the way back to CES 2012 to see our coverage of the GUS II external graphics enclosure, and now MSI has a new G.U.S. (Graphics Upgrade System) GPU enclosure to show, this time using Thunderbolt 3.
In addition to 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, the G.U.S. includes a built-in 500W power supply with 80 Plus Gold certification, as well as USB 3.0 Type-C and Type-A ports including a quick-charge port on the front of the unit.
Ryan had a look at the G.U.S. (running an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080, no less) at MSI's booth:
Specifications from MSI:
- 1x Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gbps) port to connect to host PCs
- 2x USB 3.0 Type-A (rear)
- 1x USB 3.0 Type-C (rear)
- 1x USB 3.0 Type-A w/QC (front)
- 80 Plus Gold 500W internal PSU
We do not have specifics on pricing or availablity for the G.U.S. just yet.
PC Perspective's CES 2017 coverage is sponsored by NVIDIA.

MSI GUS and Intel NUC will be
MSI GUS and Intel NUC will be nice but won’t they have to implement Solid State Gaming or Solid State Computing and standard ATX before they do that on Micro PCs. Anyway it is really exciting times for Computer Manufacturers.
I think what you are talking
I think what you are talking about, and someone correct me with correct terminology, is that the motherboard with thunderbolt 3 capability built into it also needs to have bios/firmware support added to it. Razer already did this with some of their laptops and their eGPU enclosure.
Also, ATX motherboards are not a requirement and neither is a SSD(solid state drive)
I’m assuming he meant an SSD, and not “Solid State Gaming or Solid State Computing”, because if he did then no clue what he means.

looks awesome…I have been waiting for this…one need one laptop to game, work, and travel.
I dream of the day when they
I dream of the day when they stop letting children design gaming hardware. Where is the Rolls Royce of the PC hardware business?
I believe the Rolls Royce
I believe the Rolls Royce brand your hoping for already exists – Razer. If their logo didn’t look so ridiculous, I might actually be willing to bring one of their computers in to a meeting where I want my coworkers to take me seriously. Another brand that has some relatively clean designs is MSI – The GS63VR stands out in this regard. MSI actually has a clean, simple logo, but instead they use a ridiculous looking Ferrari logo with a dragon on it on their gaming hardware – no thanks.
I’ve been wondering the same thing about why PC gaming equipment looks so ridiculous. The Verge asked this same question of some PC gaming equipment manufacturers:
http://www.theverge.com/ces/2017/1/5/14165402/gaming-pc-design-ces-2017-lenovo-samsung-razer
The sad answer? This look still, even now, sells. The Verge challenges gaming hardware manufacturers to take a leap of faith and create gaming hardware with clean, modern designs – I too hope this happens. I would love to buy our engineers gaming laptops instead of mobile workstations (smaller, more powerful, and cheaper than their mobile workstation counterparts), but I can’t so long as they look like alien spaceships.
